Paul Borrud and Ernesto Moreno

I had just gotten back from the US Amateur.  I had not planned to play in the scratch match because I fully expected to be with Joseph through the whole week. Since it was friday and the tournament was scheduled for the week-end,  I figured I had no chance of finding a partner and getting into the event.  I called the Pro-Shop and found out if I could find a partner we could play in the morning.  I remembered that Paul Borrud and I had spoken about it and I called.  I spoke to his lovely wife Robbin.  She was glad I had called but mentioned that Paul would probably be busy due to a family reunion. She gave me Pauls new cell number and said she hoped we could work something out.  Paul was excited about the opportunity and pleasantly surprised about his wifes support.  It was done!  A team was formed.

The Scratch Match

The Scratch Match is a two man best-ball event contested in match play form.  An eighteen hole qualifyer is followed by an eight team, seeded by score bracket tournament.  The scratch match is one of SJCCs major as well as;  the stroke play, (Masters), the  match play event, ( Continuous since 1914 except 1942 due to WW2,  member-member, Oak Tree ( Invitational)

The Champions

We started Saturday morning qualifying with a four under par 66.  The score was good enough to be seeded 1st.  Our first match was against Bobby Barriteau and Jay Meyers.  We were fortunate enough to win on the 17th hole. The next day we faced Bob Amerian and Vince Perrone.  this match was pressure packed and went the distance.  Our final match was against Matt Fondiller and Tom Holt.  Both Paul and I showed up for this game and kept  the match in hand from the beginning.  We won 3 up with 2 to play.
